"...after the gunshot", replies the answering machine of Herr Flick. Today, a newspaper from progressive left origin had the audacity to bundle all the reactions - or rather lack of reactions - from various members of the board of governors from Dexia and the Communal Holding. The summary is quite a revelation.

On the Communal holding , 3 were not available for comment. The message from those willing to comment on the recent chain of events, we give you the following main quotes and insights.

- Main message is that this crisis originated in the US and that Europe is the victim, nothing we can do about it.

- "I am in the board but that means nothing. We gather a few times a year but we are not directly involved with Dexia. We have a lot of shares but it's the board which should supervise this" (member of the board of supervisors)

- "Of course we have some responsibility when things go wrong but who could have possibly predicted this in 2008 and 2011 ? I hope that those who are now in charge assume their responsibility" (!!)

- "We never bought new Dexia shares since 2008 ; we never acted in a speculative way" (Note : how to categorize selling put options at strike 5,76 when now executed at 0,60 generate an EUR 90 mio loss ?)

Turning now to the Dexia board and here we have a stronger case of answering machines taking a majority. Of the 11 people mentioned in the news article, 6 refuse to comment. From the other 5, we have the following diamonds and pearls :

- "This is not a problem of the bank, it's rather a problem of the holding. So we are not to be blamed".

- "I find it a pitty I was on the board for such a short time (read could have done good things if I had more time ?)

- "Whether I feel responsible ? no comment on that. I am 42 and a lawyer. And I practice in premier league, not in 4th devision"(read "sue me and I sue your pants off ?")

- "After the facts, one can only wonder whether it was such a good idea in the first place to have all these politicians and representatives of interest groups being seated in the board. Per definition, politicians should not be involved when it comes to risk-baring capital" (left wing representative)

Group Arco : 5 being mentioned, 3 without comment. The 2 who comment feel not responsible with 1 stating that this is a global crisis, difficult to pinpoint who is to blame. Ethias 1 and also here we have a "dead line" on the other side.

Now the point here is not to attack people or to pinpoint who is really to blame. It was also very predictable that the blame game here merely consists out of blaming the other or blaming the external unknown enemy. The point is that a lot of these people have received a mandate from the electorate by means of voting, called democracy. One of the key elements in this system is that those elected, be it in parliament or somewhere else, have a moral and legal responsibility to justify themselves before the public and in this case taxpayer. So "no comment" is not the right answer. If Cicero was still alive, he would surely have taken this case on. And he probably would have done so in common interest, free of honorary fee.

Yeah, where are those ambulance chasers who call themselves Human Rights lawyers when you need one.
Oh, they are all too busy with the dictators currently housed at Den Hague...

Financial enslavement of people by their government is also a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Exploitation of citizens by their rulers comes under many forms. In Europe wars are always linked to excessive government debt. Thus sovereign debt can be considered as a direct cause of war crimes on the Old Continent.
Citizens in Athens understood this some 2400 years ago during the height of the Peloponnese War, when a group started asking themselves questions over dinner - what the purpose and command structure of the Sicilian Expedition really was. The Politics of the Athenian Empire (oh yes, the Dalian League was an Empire not a Democracy) were such that the entire project (Dalian League) was turning into a mess.

The Athenian Assembly voted not once, but twice (no doubt to express how serious they were) to put 3 commanders in charge of the Sicilian Expedition - one young and aggressive, one old and conservative and the third was a peace negotiator. They each had a different strategy. But the Athenian Assembly thought that by putting them all in change together, this would bring balance to the enterprise... and force them to work out a consensus.
    Don't we just love consensuses!

And no one has yet discussed the actual amount of derivatives built on this huge holdup ...

I can't help but thinking that what we suspect to be the tip of an big nasty eurotitanic sinking iceberg might actually be the tip of much larger undersea mountain....

In the meanwhile, our political leaders are discussing on how to ensure some comfort to the 1st class passengers (oups, I eman the systemic players ) , so that they don't get a cold, and how much paint will be needed to hide the hideous scratch in the hull.

Well, the Sicilian expedition ended up in a total chaos, Athens and its allies losing the best part of their army and of their fleet. The rest of was was really the first total war of human history saw Sparta - a trully totalitarian regime - rise to hegemony when the Spartan fleet eventually entered the Piraeus.

By the way, the Athenian "democracy" of the 5th century BC as a lot in common with the current USA, while Europe looks a lot like the louse confederation that called itself the Delos League. Let's remember that Athens repetedly carried out raids on its own allies to keep them in line with the underlying strategy of the alliance, seized the common treasure for the sole purpose of hiding the collapse of its comerce based economy and destroyed Eubea - that had different ideas about the conduct of the league policy.

The same Athenian democracy also invented the very concept of defaulting.

So whoever challenges the idea that the western society has deep hellenic roots should maybe reconsider his or her views :-)

        @Philippe

First of all Sparta wasn't an authoritarian regime, but rather the only egalitarian regime of the Ancient World.

Secondly: What makes you so sure that Athenian Democracy invented the very concept of default??? Just because you read it in an article of De Tijd? Sadly this is a myth.
The concepts of credit & debt forgiveness (Jubilee) are as old as the agrarian societies of Mesopotamia. It's why all they did was study calculations and measures & record the value of everything

Thirdly: the Hellenistic Period is only after Alexander the Great and Aristotle... so it has nothing to do with the topic of the Athenian Democracy and Default.
Athenians, Greeks, Hellenes... Where did "the Greeks" come from by the way???

Hallo,we weten nu waarom.
