Friday Fun : Armageddon is a nice place

It has been a while but with the current cocktail brewing, we feel that we are approaching the ultimate moment of truth. And most of us would agree that this implies the end of days, the big one coming up and where every one should seek for shelter if even remotely possible. Briefly, (economic) history will be written only moments from now. The paradox might be that when everyone believes this is the case, the self-fulfilling prophecy will actually take place, Keynesian mechanics in motion, full circle and the paradox complete.

Yesterday and courtesy of SocGen, we received the following overview of what might be expected the coming days and its potential impact on markets :

European-action.jpg

Notice anything funny from the chart above ? Well, it tells you one side of the probability distribution but not the side of "Grexit", "EMU break-up" etc, most likely not the desired scenario for the buy and sell-side desks of a majority of brokers and investment banks. A sentiment & game changer nevertheless.

But how would Armageddon look/sound like ? What's the sound of the big reset or big Copernican revolution, whatever you want to call it ? It can go either way but chances are we are in for some nasty surprises in the short term, and most likely in the medium term as well. By means of music, It's difficult to describe the feeling of "when the going gets tough, really tough". I would like to start with the "unheimliches gefuhl", meaning a large degree of unquantifiable uncertainty by a song of Noordkaap. In this song, we have some one very scared, manic depressed and scared from the world outside, and totally overwhelmed by everything what happens. Briefly it's too big to digest or comprehend, briefly "Giant". And with the prophecy at the end : "the higher the fence, the bigger the fruitcake on both sides of the fence". This does not only apply on geopolitical situations currently taking place all over the world but also on our current sovereign debt/financial crisis : Ever since this crisis broke out - and by postponing solutions - we have been lifting the stakes, regardless of the efforts of the fire brigade :

Over now to the real actors of this final scene. "Dear Angela (Herman), do you have the ace of spades and how are you gonna play this particular hand ?". Whatever Angela decides, things can become pretty unpredictable for all players on the market involved, meaning long and shorts on EUR/USD, equity, commodities etc. So the next song should grasp something very aggressive, brutal or sudden impact. I considered the Pixies (debaser) but came up with a Pixies squared : A good idea (she said) by Sugar. For those feeling uncomfortable with guitars making some noise, please skip to part 3 ; For those feeling adventurous and more daring, let's go all the way !

"Temptation, so much for creation", dixit Bob Mould. Creation, creative destruction, may be in the end we shouldn't be so pessimistic after all. If disaster strikes and there is nothing we can do about it, it's better to accept our fate and put on our dancing shoes in view of the weekend coming up. So let's put on a big smile and shout out loud in chorus with Michael Stipe : It's the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine !). It's only money after all.

Cheers and have a nice weekend

I don't totally agree with your concluding sentence that it's only money after all.... the current political apparatus in the US (and EU) might not allow us to dance on the tables for a long time...

Sorry, but sometimes I get carried away and certainly on Friday, in a desperate attempt to find salvation in humor. You are probably right, we shouldn't take the concept of money too easily. But looking at your link reference - Austrian school - that shouldn't come as a surprise :-)

“It’s Angela Merkel who’s in denial about the problem of monetary union,” he said. “The only question you need to ask…is about the psychological nature of a German woman…I’m serious about this! Sometimes history boils down to the [ideology] of a single person.”

option 1 (40% chance) remains the belgian scenario: the EMU becomes a bigger Belgium, with the German states subsidising the Latin states and a democratic deficit

option 2 (30% chance) is that we get a German euro (maybe France included)

      http://www.davidmcwilliams.ie/2012/06/19/hard-and-soft-options

It seems reasonable to suggest that what Germany wants is a stronger, tighter euro to protect it from the implications of continuous infusions of cash to the periphery. This is a core euro centred around Germany. Then the EU can let the Italians and others revert to devaluations, which will work.

option 3 (20% chance) is that the euro becomes a Latin currency (with or without a new, German counterpart)

option 4 (10% chance) is that the euro implodes

Wall Street still dancing, not wanting to see Armaggeddon coming: what are commodities seeing that the stock market is not? The 10-year bond yield seems nearly as unhappy as commodities are.

    http://www.hussmanfunds.com/wmc/wmc120625.htm

No problemo for Wall Street. It sees chocolate Jesuses coming, no matter what. Big Holy Spirit Bernanke says so and Almighty Father Obama will allow him to sacrifice as many of his chocolate sons as is necessary to bring salvation from their sins.

No change, not even after 2000 years.

The European politicans didn't care that peoples are drowning down they are worried now about the quality of the champange that they are drinking after the deckchairs of the debttanic are starting the move quite vilolently.
What else can it be the European Debttanic was unsinkable and they should know because the builded the party boat....

They will fix the Debbttanic, if only to keep their party going.

In the words of captain Van Rompuy: force older people to work longer. Gives a new meaning to the notion of debt slaves.

The new narcissistic trick in town: enrich yourself with the creation of huge amounts of debt (politicians use it to buy votes and seats, bankers to collect excessive amounts of fees). Than, use this debt as an excuse to say to your "fellow citizens" (euphemism here): we have no other choice anymore but asking additional efforts from you like working longer, harder, more flexible so that you can pay the higher taxes to repair our sinking ship. Because our party must go on.

And increasingly: please give your votes and your money to our children too, so that they can join our party here in the upperclass.

Narcissists rule, en they like their own politico-economic theories that treat them so well.

Factors of the narcisstic personality index: i.e., authority, superiority, exhibitionism, entitlement, vanity, exploitativeness and self-sufficiency.

Professor Charles Wyplosz from Geneva University said the entire crisis strategy imposed by Germany since May 2010 had been a "disaster" and risks setting off a chain of sovereign defaults that may bankrupt Germany itself.

"From the very start, it was clear that a domino game was under way. The solution will have to combine debt structuring and ECB lending in last resort to banks and governments. Angela Merkel needs now to lift the German veto," he said.

The professor has a point but what is the worth of Europe without Germany? What is the worth of 1 euro then? The day Germany leaves the EU that is the day that every european will change there euros into D-marks.So you will have debt deflation for Germany. In one day the real german debt will be 10 percent lower. After one month the real german debt will only be 10 percent because the euro wouldn't be worth a dime.

Do not get me wrong incognito.I did not say and I never said that Germany would be the winner. In this kind of game there are no winners, only losers.
Somebody has to pay for the champange on the party boat the Debttanic. The question is who.We or our children?
What is the point of a banking union if the week spot of all of those banks is the burden of governmental debt?
Is it the first step in confiscating the monies of the commoners?
I think it is.?Remember Bruno Tobback who said that it would be better that the government would control the private pension funds.A commoner would do funny things with amount that he would receive better to give him a monthly sum .The rest would end up in a silver fund.....
The bonus for the commoner would be a free lollipop but no interest.

          1. Nacht Und Nebel

            On 26 Jun, 2012

            1. Nacht Und Nebel

              On 26 Jun, 2012

After all, Germany’s prosperity is in large measure a consequence of monetary union. The euro has given German exporters a far more competitive exchange rate than the old Deutschmark would have. And the rest of the eurozone remains the destination for 42 per cent of German exports. Plunging half of that market into a new Depression can hardly be good for Germany.

Ultimately, as Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, herself acknowledged last week, monetary union always implied further integration into a fiscal and political union. But before Europe gets anywhere near taking this historical step, it must first of all show it has learnt the lessons of the past. The EU was created to avoid repeating the disasters of the 1930s. It is time Europe’s leaders – and especially Germany’s – understood how perilously close they are to doing just that.

This is not you against me.We both had a bad hair day last sunday.I respect the autor to much for his efforts here for that.Let us agree to disagree.
But be honest Europe says we have work longer because the pension funds are thus France lowers the age to retire to 60
Europe says that Greece must get its budget in order so Greece has more civil servant now then before the euro crisis.
Europe says we need to help the poor spanish civilians who are out of work so Spain get a deal that increases there deficit by 10 percent thus incresing the taxes for the unemployed spanish civilian..
Europe says we must stop this problem from spreading to Italy yet Italy has to pay 20 billion for the spanisch rescue with money that Italy doesn't have.Italy borrowing to Spain at an interset rate at 3 percent but paying almost 7?

Can anybody explain that to me?
