Nieuwjaarsbrief aan de minister-president

Beste minister-president
Een nieuw jaar, een nieuw decennium. Het voorbije verloor de Vlaamse groeimachine wat van zijn kadans. Autofabrieken zoals Opel, technologie en de farmacie, parels van weleer, verloren veel van hun glans.
In Vlaanderen worden steeds meer heilige huisjes door vakbonden, werkgevers en politieke partijen bewoond. Waardoor ondernemerschap, creativiteit en innovatie minder worden beloond.
Daarom aan u de vraag: moeten we radicaal breken, of alleen een tandje bijsteken ?
Aan u de uitdagende taak, om op uw visie, durf en frisse wijsheid te rekenen.
Om nieuwe paden naar een duurzame welvaart voor Vlaanderen uit te tekenen.
Beste Kris, een sterk sporthart, leiderschap en doorzetting geven u het talent.
Zodat 2010 een economische ster wordt aan het Vlaamse welvaartsfirmament.

“The FT is a part of the problem”

The business newspaper Financial Times has chosen Lloyd Blankfein, CEO of Goldman Sachs, as Person of the Year:
For all of these reasons, both positive and negative, the Financial Times has chosen Lloyd Blankfein as its Person of the Year. His job and his personality have made him the public face of Wall Street during its most testing period since the 1930s.
But while the FT may agree that Blankfein is doing “God’s work,” others view the bank as indicative of exactly what is wrong with Wall Street. Indeed, Blankfein himself apologized last month for Goldman Sachs’ role in the financial crisis. And Goldman Sachs’ trading practices are currently under investigation by the federal government.
In response to the FT’s decision to honor Blankfein, noted bank analyst Christopher Whalen has canceled his subscription to the paper.
“Mr Blankfein and his colleagues at Goldman Sachs, in my view, have done more to damage the reputations of global financial professionals than any other organization in 2009, yet you applaud them,” wrote Whalen, founder of Institutional Risk Analytics, in a letter to the FT. “Not only is your suggestion ridiculous and repugnant, but it illustrates to me the fact that the FT is part of the problem in global finance, not as one would hope and expect, part of the solution.”
Bravo to Mister Whalen.

* grotere etatisering (oa. Wallonisering van Vlaanderen)
* verminderde loyaliteit
* grotere dualiteit
* waardedestructie bij beleggers (TINA als grote sirene)
naast enkele andere, al vaak aangehaalde trends zoals: hefboomeffecten in de economie, de Econoshock (die bestaat uit 6 megatrends) etc. [...]

Solar power from space

A few days ago, the Californian regulator approved an ambitious project to beam solar energy from space.
On Thursday, the California Public Utilities Commission gave its blessing to an agreement that would see the Pacific Gas and Electric Company buy 200 megawatts of power beamed down from solar-power satellites beginning in 2016.
A start-up company called Solaren is designing the satellites, which it says will use radio waves to beam energy down to a receiving station on Earth.
But space-based solar power must grapple with the high cost per kilogram of launching things into space, says Richard Schwartz of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. (…) A patent the company has won describes ways to reduce the system’s weight, including using inflatable mirrors to focus sunlight on solar cells, so a smaller number can collect the same amount of energy.
The least you can say is that they have ambition…

Zonnig Vlaanderen

Zonne-energie is in Vlaanderen bezig aan een steile opmars, mee dankzij de massale subsidies. De subsidies zijn essentieel geweest voor deze doorbraak, al kan je de vraag stellen of de overheid niet wat meer de nadruk had moeten leggen op minder sexy maar ook minder dure oplossingen zoals energie-efficientie en isolatie.
