C’était comme toujours très agréable et chaud à la fois, avec des questions de l’audience qui venaient comme une mitraillette. J’avais le plaisir de revoir JP Jacqmyn (ancien présentateur de cette émission) et Jean-Paul Philippot (l’administrateur-général de la RTBF). All media report that unemployment decreased in the US last month. So, no worries about Greece, the US is improving ! Not…
The reason why unemployment is dropping, is simply discouraged workers leaving the job statistics. The more discouraged workers leave, the more unemployment drops.
In the meanwhile, the latest batch of benchmark revisions have revealed that 8.4mn jobs have now been lost since the start of the recession, this is significantly worse than the previously estimated 7.2mn jobs over the same period, which now equates to an average of 337K per month

Gisteren in De Standaard, over de toestand van windenergie in België. Blijkbaar niet al te rooskleurig:
Geen enkel West-Europees land produceert minder windenergie dan België. De toename is niet voldoende om de kloof te dichten.
België sluit 2009 af met een vijftiende plaats in de Europese landenrangschikking op basis van capaciteit. Het Belgische vermogen bedraagt 563 megawatt.

Hoe moet het verder met Griekenland ? – Update

De paradox is dat in Griekenland zware maatregelen moeten worden genomen worden, terwijl het een land is waar sociale onrust net een kenmerk is geworden. Het lijkt dus irreëel om dit te verwachten van een land zoals Griekenland, terwijl het nét dat zal moeten doen om bij de euro te kunnen blijven. De Gordiaanse knoop van Griekenland is dus moeilijk te ontwarren – terwijl zo’n knoop een Griekse uitvinding is…
Een poging om dat te duiden deden we in het programma van Koen Fillet, Feiten en Fillet. Toegegeven, ik lukte er niet in de knoop echt door te hakken.
Bottom line: de markten zullen druk zetten, niet de politiek. Het gevaar voor de euro is wellicht het besmettingseffect naar landen zoals Spanje. Als Europa zacht is voor Griekenland, dan loopt het fout bij anderen.
Zoals gezegd enkele posts geleden: Griekenland is voor de souvereine schuldencrisis, wat Northern Rock was voor de bankencrisis.

China: the imperative to change

The OECD released its bi-annual report on China.
OECD reports are in general not the most exciting stuff to read. It is never ground breaking, and it will not win a creativity report. But that’s of course not the intention anyway. The OECD gives a rather fair view of the current state of the Chinese economy, and provides data and charts that are always a pleasure to view.
I enjoyed the chart on the evolution of the shares in world manufacturing for instance (see below), although the word ‘enjoy’ is somewhat ironical. China is powering ahead, and has surpassed the US, Japan and Germany in a very short period.

Paul Volcker’s view on bank reform

Paul Volcker is perhaps the biggest central banker in US history, he most surely is the tallest. In this weekend’s New York Times, he writes an op-ed on the necessary bank reform in the US. In short, Volcker sais that the current solution for the banking crisis has created huge moral hazard risk. Making banks “small enough to fail” is not a feasible solution. Therefore, he proposes that investment banks and retail banks should be separated. Investment banks might fail, and their creditors, shareholders and clients would then suffer from the consequences.
